New Book Alert: Love Leadership: The New Way to Lead in a Fear-Based World, by John Hope Bryant

Posted on 29 October 2009 by Phillipa Mitchell

A dynamic young leader shows how leading with love and respect creates success in business and life in the book “Love LeadershipLove Leadership

Written by the founder of Operation HOPE and advisor to the past two U.S. presidents, this groundbreaking book makes the case that the best way to get ahead is to figure out what you have to give to a world seemingly obsessed with the question: What do I get? Aimed at a new generation of leaders and extremely relevant for today’s economic climate, Love Leadership outlines Bryant’s five laws of love-based leadership-Loss Creates Leaders (there can be no strength without legitimate suffering), Fear Fails (only respect and love leads to success), Love Makes Money (love is at the core of true wealth), Vulnerability is Power (when you open up to people they open up to you), and Giving is Getting (the more you offer to others, the more they will give back to you).

  • One of today’s most influential leaders, Bryant has appeared on Oprah and in articles in the LA Times, NY Times, and the Wall Street Journal
  • Bryant’s bold approach to leadership is well-suited for today’s tough economic environment and a world gripped by fear and uncertainty
  • Outlines the innovative five laws of love-based leadership
Love Leadership is that unique and powerful book that bridges the gap between solid business advice and pure inspiration.

In 1992, at the age of 26, John Hope Bryant was running a successful financial services firm when the Los Angeles riots broke out. After the violence and chaos subsided, Bryant saw that his community needed a “hand up, not a handout,” so he founded Operation HOPE, an organization dedicated to helping low-wealth communities attain financial literacy empowerment. Today, Bryant is a sought-after speaker recognized for his leadership and service around the world.

In Love Leadership, Bryant chronicles his story of transformation from a teenager growing up in South Los Angeles to the leader of one of the most impressive antipoverty organizations in the country, and shares the unlikely ingredient for his leadership success: love. He shows leaders how to break away from the long-standing leadership style—one based on fear. Instead, he suggests that the best way to lead in both your professional and personal life is to figure out what you have to give others in a world obsessed with the question “what do I get?”

Drawing on his remarkable success story and on interviews with love-based leaders such as Former President Bill Clinton, Bill George, and Andrew Young, Bryant outlines the five laws of love-based leadership:

  • Loss creates leaders: There can be no inner growth without the pain of legitimate suffering.
  • Fear fails: Leading through fear is antiquated and self-defeating, a crippling indulgence that we can no longer afford.
  • Love makes money: The expression of love in business—creating long-term relationships with customers and employees based on caring for others and doing good—makes everyone wealthy.
  • Vulnerability is power: When you open up, people open up to you. Real leaders know that vulnerability is not a weakness, but rather their greatest strength.
  • Giving is getting: Leaders give, followers take. Giving inspires loyalty, attracts good people, confers peace of mind, and lies at the core of true wealth.
Aimed at a new generation of leaders and extremely relevant in today’s complex and fast-moving world, Love Leadership is a bold and contrarian guide to leadership and success.
John Hope Bryant
Reviews
“I have watched John Hope Bryant dazzle audiences from Harvard to the World Economic Forum. Now he pours his compassion and charisma into the pages of this book, delivering a powerful message about rediscovering our humanity. Having worked his way up from the shadows of urban life to become a successful global leader, John has developed a personal philosophy that can help young leaders everywhere.”
—David Gergen, professor of public service and director, Center for Public Leadership, Harvard Kennedy School

“The words ‘love’ and ‘leadership’ perfectly exemplify John Hope Bryant and all that he stands for. When it comes to making a difference and succeeding in business and life, this book is a must-read for today’s current and future leaders.”

—Jim Clifton, Chairman and CEO, Gallup, Inc.

“Bryant tackles problems with an enthusiasm and optimism that are infectious. In this book, he gives us a recipe for personal success driven by a simple notion: treating others with respect and dignity creates true long-term success. This message and his strategies for living it couldn’t be more timely as we address the failures of leadership that created today’s financial crisis.”

—Don J. McGrath, chairman, Bancwest Corporation and Bank of the West

“A short conversation with John Hope Bryant in China changed my outlook on financial literacy, leadership, and love. The short time you spend reading this book will change yours. Changing the world starts with changing your life, and John—from the slums of Compton to the White House and more—will make this happen for you.”

—Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia and president of Wikia, Inc.

“John Hope Bryant proves that power is the ability to give more than you receive, to lead more than you follow, and to love more than you hate.”

—Steve Bartlett, president and CEO, The Financial Services Roundtable

Malcolm Gladwell fans, Ahoy! His new book “What the Dog Saw” is now available!

Posted on 20 October 2009 by Phillipa Mitchell

Malcolm Gladwell’s new book, WHAT THE DOG SAW presents nineteen brilliantly researched and provocative essaysWhat the Dog Saw that exhibit the curiosity his readers love, each with a graceful narrative that leads to a thought-provoking analysis. The explorations here delve into subjects as varied as why some people choke while others panic; how changes meant to make a situation safer — like childproof lids on medicine — don’t help because people often compensate with more reckless behaviour; and the idea that genius is inextricably tied up with precocity.

“You don’t start at the top if you want to find the story. You start in the middle, because it’s the people in the middle who do the actual work in the world,” writes Gladwell in the preface to WHAT THE DOG SAW. In each piece, he offers a glimpse into the minds of a startling array of fascinating characters. “We want to know what it feels like to be a doctor,” he insists, rather than what doctors do every day, because “Curiosity about the interior life of other people’s day-to-day work is one of the most fundamental of human impulses.” Like no other writer today, Gladwell satisfies this impulse brilliantly, energizing and challenging his readers.

WHAT THE DOG SAW is organised thematically into three categories:

Part One contains stories about what Gladwell calls “minor geniuses,” people like Ron Popeil, the pitchman who by himself conceived, created, and sold the Showtime rotisserie oven to millions on TV, breaking every rule of the modern economy.

Part Two demonstrates theories, or ways of organizing experience. For example, “Million-Dollar Murray” explores the problem of homelessness — how to solve it, and whether solving it for the most extreme and costly cases makes sense as policy. In this particular piece, Gladwell looks at a controversial program that gives the chronic homeless the keys to their own apartments and access to special services while keeping less extreme cases on the street to manage on their own.

In Part Three, Gladwell examines the predictions we make about people. “How do we know whether someone is bad, or smart, or capable of doing something really well?” he asks. He writes about how educators evaluate young teachers, how the FBI profiles criminals, how job interviewers form snap judgments. He is candid in his skepticism about these methods but fascinated by the various attempts to measure talent or personality.

Malcolm Gladwell selected the essays in WHAT THE DOG SAW himself, choosing the stories and ideas that have continued to fascinate and provoke readers long after their publication in The New Yorker. The book is an invaluable gift for his existing fans, and the ideal introduction for new readers.

Malcolm Gladwell is the master of playful yet profound insight. His ability to see underneath the surface of the seemingly mundane taps into a fundamental human impulse: curiosity. From criminology to ketchup, job interviews to dog training, Malcolm Gladwell takes everyday subjects and shows us surprising new ways of looking at them, and the world around us. Are smart people overrated? What can pit bulls teach us about crime? Why are problems like homelessness easier to solve than to manage? How do we hire when we can’t tell who’s right for the job? Gladwell explores the minor geniuses, the underdogs and the overlooked, and reveals how everyone and everything contains an intriguing story. “What the Dog Saw” is Gladwell at his very best – asking questions and seeking answers in his inimitable style.

Larsson’s The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest is beaten only by Dan Brown after Super Thursday’s 800 hardbacks hit the shelves in the UK

Posted on 15 October 2009 by Phillipa Mitchell

A deluge of 800 new hardbacks hit bookshops last Thursday but it was a translated crime novel by the late SwedishGirl who Kicked the Hor journalist Stieg Larsson which saw off celebrity autobiographies from the likes of Ozzy Osbourne, Peter Kay and Chris Evans to jostle its way to the top of the book charts.

Larsson’s The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest soared into second position in the UK’s book charts last week, selling 34,152 copies in just three days, according to book sales monitor Nielsen BookScan. It came in behind Dan Brown’s thriller The Lost Symbol, which remained in the number one spot for the third week in a row with sales of 79,008 copies. Larsson’s novel, the third in his bestselling Millennium crime trilogy, follows the adventures of computer hacker Lisbeth Salander. It was one of the 800 hardbacks published last Thursday – 10 times the daily average, which has led to the day being christened Super Thursday by the book trade.

stieg-larsson-006

Waterstone’s, which changed window displays in its stores across the country overnight on Wednesday, replacing older titles with new books from the likes of Kay, Jeremy Clarkson and Audrey Niffenegger, described the Larsson novel as its “runaway success”.

“I saw somebody buy four copies and I heard from one store where somebody bought 10,” said spokesperson Jon Howells. “Our Piccadilly store opened an hour early, at 8am, for Stieg Larsson – we’re not talking Harry Potter or Dan Brown numbers but there was a definite steady flow of people wanting to get a copy or two.”

Terry Pratchett’s new Discworld novel Unseen Academicals took third place in last week’s book charts, with fellow contenders for Christmas number one including Kay’s second volume of memoir Saturday Night Peter, Driven to Distraction by Jeremy Clarkson and Guinness World Records coming in behind.

“Super Thursday” saw an extra 180,000 books sold last week compared to the week before, according to BookScan, with an extra £3.6m taken through the tills. “It’s the first big week of Christmas book sales,” said BookScan research and development analyst André Breedt. “It’s the starting pistol for Christmas,” agreed Howells.

Herta Muller wins 2009 Nobel Prize in Literature for “Nadirs”

Posted on 14 October 2009 by Phillipa Mitchell

Herta Muller wins the 2009 Nobel Prize in Literature for “NadirsNadirs

Nadirs – A collection of largely autobiographical stories based on Herta Müller’s childhood in the Romanian countryside

“A work of striking originality and power.”—Kirkus Reviews

“Müller, who won the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award for The Land of Green Plums, is considered one of the most gifted contemporary German-language writers, a claim this newly translated collection of stories would seem to prove. Once again, Müller takes us back to Communist Romania. But unlike her previous work, Nadirs is a very personal book, as much about Müller’s own family sagas as it is about the inescapable scares of communism. . . . Originally published in German ten years ago, this book was well worth the wait; it is an important achievement in contemporary Eastern European literature”—Library Journal

“The 15 stories are melodious but sober in tone, echoing an overwhelmingly oppressive social atmosphere. It’s bluntly stated that boys are injured in local factories and mothers’ lives are unrelentingly harsh; meanwhile, Müller imbues a trip to the barber or a ride on the intervillage bus with colorful, surreal twists. . . . Most of these impressionistic pieces are bursting with breathtaking, earthy details.”—Publishers Weekly

“The sudden appearance of words in unfamiliar semantic contexts turns her texts into sensual landscapes of beauty and pain. The translator, Sieglinde Lug, has accomplished this in a highly convincing manner and is able to give the reader a taste of Müller’s unique language. “—Irena E. Fürhoff, International Fiction Review

Juxtaposing reality and fantasy, nightmares and dark laughter, Nadirs is a collection of largely autobiographical stories based on Herta Müller’s childhood in the Romanian countryside. The individual tales reveal a child’s often nightmarish impressions of life in her village. Seamlessly mixing reality with dream-like images, they brilliantly convey the inner, troubled life of a child and at the same time capture the violence and corruption of life under an oppressive state. Herta Müller has been one of the most prolific and acclaimed German-language writers of the last decade. She was awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Literature

New Book Alert: Second is Nothing: Creating a Multi-Billion Dollar Cellular Industry by Alan Knott-Craig

Posted on 12 October 2009 by Phillipa Mitchell

SECOND IS NOTHINGSecond is Nothing tells the story of Alan Knott-Craig, moving from his unique childhood challenges to his incredible journey to bring cellular to Africa – continually motivated by his father’s words, ‘First is first and second is nothing’. Bold and courageous – sometimes outrageous – Alan’s visionary leadership, foresight and persistence put Vodacom and South Africa on the map of world firsts, ultimately making his dream of a connected Africa come true. But it was a dream for which he came close to paying the ultimate price.

A maverick civil servant from the government telephone operator, Telkom, Alan Knott-Craig masterfully steered a fledgling cellular company to unparalleled financial success, shaping a revolutionary concept into one of the most powerful brands in Southern Africa – Vodacom. On Alan’s retirement in 2008, Vodacom, valued at R150 billion, had released fourteen consecutive years of double-digit growth, an operating profit for that year of R12.5 billion, an income of R48 billion and 33 million customers in five African countries. It was an exceptional achievement for a man whose priority was not to build a financial empire, but to empower people through communication.

Alan Knott-Craig holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (Cum Laude) from the University of Cape Town and a Master of Business Leadership degree from the University of South Africa. In 2006 and 2009 respectively he was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Business Leadership from the University of South Africa and an honorary Doctorate in Business Administration from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, both in recognition of his contribution in telecommunications

From Politicsweb: PRESS STATEMENT: SOUTH AFRICAN SATIRICAL NEWS SHOW, ZA NEWS, FINALLY TO LAUNCH

6 October 2009, Cape Town : After ten years in development the satirical news show created by Zapiro and Thierry Cassuto will begin showing on Tuesday 6th October. ZA NEWS will become one of the few South African political satires featuring content based on current South African issues and news. The topical comedy skits feature local politicians and celebrities such as Julius Malema, Jacob Zuma, Helen Zille and Nelson Mandela in latex puppet form.  ZA NEWS is being headline sponsored by popular airline and ecommerce site kulula.com and hosted by Mail and Guardian Online.

“The exciting thing about the opening up of online channels is how we can entertain and build relationships with communities.  Here we can develop new programmes, we can engage our audiences, and we can share perspectives in an interactive environment.  kulula.com and the Mail & Guardian make perfect partners as relevant, powerful brands and leaders in building online communities,” said Thierry Cassuto , co-creator and producer / director of ZA NEWS.

Online distribution was decided upon following massive viewership (over 100 000 views) on YouTube, and other web channels, during the lengthy negotiations with broadcasters to get the show on air. ZA News has been created as short episodes that run for roughly 3 minutes each in length from Tuesday to Friday and a longer skit on Saturday which highlights the events from the week. The shows will be streamed via web video and are available at www.mg.co.za, www.zanews.co.za and www.kulula.com.

“In South Africa more happens in a week than in a year in some other places. ZA NEWS is outrageous, infuriating and as funny as the news, only more so,” comments Zapiro.

“Political satire is an essential part of a vibrant democracy and I’m amazed that with so much inspiration all around us it’s taken so long for our country to allow political satire to get on air. Where many have proved reluctant to support this type of content, we feel strongly about giving South Africans a voice and a channel for healthy, robust and engaging debate.  We need to laugh together and grow together and the power of the internet means that brands such as kulula.com are in a position to fill the vacuum through sponsorship and access to our sizable online audience,” said Heidi Brauer , Group Marketing Executive Manager of kulula.com

Nick Dawes, editor for the Mail and Guardian comments, “We believe that www.mg.co.za is the logical home for ZA NEWS as it points the way forward for us a news and content company that is increasingly investing in new platforms, and reaching new audiences. It is important that the Mail and Guardian does this in a way that will continue to represent our basic editorial values – independence, fearlessness, quality and relevance.  ZA NEWS ticks all of those boxes and while I find it baffling that none of the traditional broadcasters have been bold enough to take it on, I am delighted that the Mail and Guardian is able to fill the gap.”

“It’s been 10 years since Zapiro and I first conceived the idea of a satirical news show using latex puppets. We are extremely grateful to kulula.com and the Mail & Guardian for realizing and believing in our passion and funding the first season.  With their support we are able to share laughter with others online, as we say at ZA NEWS, because “Here we can,” concludes Cassuto.

NEWSFLASH! Amazon launches the Kindle worldwide, UK store to follow

Posted on 07 October 2009 by Phillipa Mitchell

Amazon.com has launched an international wireless version of its digital reading device the Kindle, with UKkindle publishers including Atlantic Books, Bloomsbury, Canongate, Faber, Hachette, HarperCollins, and Penguin signed up to make their books available. Random House, however, appears not to have signed an agreement with Amazon.com for the distribution of its content internationally.

The move, which was predicted in July by The Bookseller, and again last week, was announced overnight. Readers in the UK can pre-order the $279 device from today (7th October), and Amazon will begin shipping it on 19th October. As rumoured, the device will be sold from the .com website, rather than the .co.uk domain, and will be priced in dollars. But in a letter to customers, Jeff Bezos, founder and c.e.o of Amazon, said a UK store would be forthcoming:”In the future, we plan to introduce a UK-centric Kindle experience, enabling you to purchase Kindle and Kindle books in sterling from our Amazon.co.uk site.”

Amazon has partnered with AT&T to utilise its global wireless coverage. Amazon said its Kindle Store would offer international customers new releases and bestsellers “typically priced less than physical editions”.

Bezos said: “Kindle is the most wished for, the most gifted, and the #1 bestselling product across the millions of items we sell on Amazon, and we’re excited to… announce a new addition to the Kindle family—Kindle with global wireless. At home or abroad in over 100 countries, you can think of a book and download it wirelessly in less than 60 seconds.”

Amazon will offer its customers more than 200,000 English-language titles. Already a number of UK publishers have signed up to make their books available on the Kindle Store, including Atlantic Books, Bloomsbury, Canongate, Faber and Faber, Hachette, Harlequin, HarperCollins, Lonely Planet, Penguin, Profile Books, Quercus, Simon & Schuster and Wiley.

John Makinson, Penguin chief executive, said: “Penguin is a leading supplier of digital books to Kindle in the US and we are delighted to be extending that successful partnership to the rest of the world. The publishing industry is experiencing explosive growth in digital book sales in the U.S. and we hope to stimulate digital buying elsewhere by making our content widely available on new devices.”

Stephen Page, publisher and chief executive of Faber, added: “We are always seeking new ways of finding readers for the writers we publish, so we’re excited by Kindle’s launch beyond the US, and to be developing our strong partnership with Amazon beyond physical books.”

It is not clear why Random House is not part of the equation. Its US spokesman Stuart Applebaum told the New York Times that the company’s “discussions with Amazon about this opportunity are ongoing, productive and private”.

Lonely Planet guides are now available in the Kindle Store, joining existing travel guide selection from publishers Rick Steves, Frommers and Michelin. “Lonely Planet is excited to make a vast selection of travel guides from Australia to Zanzibar available to Kindle customers around the world,” said chief executive Matt Goldberg.

The US Kindle Store now has more than 350,000 books, including new releases and 104 of 112 New York Times Bestsellers, which are typically $9.99 or less. The price of the US version has been reduced from $299 to $259, it was also announced today.

More than 75,000 books have been added to the US Kindle Store in just the last five months. The device holds up to 1,500 books.

Interested to hear what our Pepperland customers think about this? Are you ready for the Kindle?
